Hi, Prolifers.

I want to ask you all a question. Or a few questions. Actually, quite a few. A kind of serious one, that goes to the very heart of your whole movement. And I’d appreciate answers that aren’t snarky or assholish.

What makes you think that you have the right to tell anyone else what to do with their body?

When all of you (or the majority of you) say “I would adopt your baby!”, how do you account for the half a million children that are already alive, breathing, and in Foster Care waiting for you to do just that? Don’t they deserve a home where they can be safe and cared for and loved? Or is that just true until they’ve been born and after that it doesn’t matter?

Why do so many of you say (TW for rape mention) that if a woman* were to be raped and become pregnant from that rape, you would take her choice away and force her to remain pregnant against her will? And how many of you are rape victims and can even fathom the depth of what you are saying?

Why do so many of you say that it would be better for a woman to die in childbirth rather than have an abortion that could save her life? Or if a child develops Spina Bifoda in the womb, or Sirenomelia, or develops without kidneys, or any one of the large number of things that can happen where the child is incredibly unlikely to survive birth (or in the case of Sirenomelia, will absolutely not survive and will die in the womb), why do you say it is better for that woman to carry that fetus to term, rather than spare her the mental, emotional, and physical pain and suffering by getting an abortion?

Or the women who have abortions because they live in poor areas, where they cannot afford to raise a child because they can barely afford to take care of themselves, why do you not offer to help her? Where are you when her lights are getting turned off because she had to choose between food and diapers and paying the electric bill and the baby daddy is nowhere to be found?

Why does your “prolife” stance end when she gives birth? And before you all shout at me “IT DOESN’T!!”, I want you to think abut this: How many children have you helped today? In the last month? In the 6 months? In the last year? How may drug addicted sick babies did you help care for in the NICU, even if it’s only to hold them or talk to them, providing much needed comfort? How many children have you taken in from abusive or neglectful homes? How many children have you adopted? When you saw a woman struggling down the street, trying to push a $10 dollar stroller and still wrestle an armload of grocery bags while you drive by in your car, did you offer her a ride home, or even park your car and offer to help carry a couple of her bags? When you saw a homeless family in a shelter or on the street, did you offer them money, or to put them up in a hotel even for a night, or buy them dinner, offer to help one of the adults find work, or, heaven forbid, offer up space in your own home? How many? If you care so much about life and people and children…where are you when they need you?
